Unlocking Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time transforms how players navigate the vast fields of Hyrule. Beyond serving as a faster mode of transportation, Link's loyal mare allows access to hidden areas and essential side quests. Securing her requires a mix of childhood preparation, musical bonding, and a daring horse race during adulthood.

Meeting Epona in Childhood

Your journey to obtaining Epona begins when Link is still a child visiting Lon Lon Ranch. Speak with Malon in the center corral to learn her family's backstory and meet the skittish young mare. Pulling out the Fairy Ocarina in front of Malon teaches Link Epona's Song, establishing a lifelong connection with the steed.

Returning to Lon Lon Ranch as an Adult

After pulling the Master Sword and travelling seven years into the future, return to Lon Lon Ranch. The greedy Ingo has taken over the property from Talon under Ganondorf's reign. Pay Ingo 10 Rupees to ride a horse inside the enclosure for a limited time.

Playing Epona's Song to Summon Her

Once inside the corral, stand near the wild horses and play Epona's Song on your ocarina. Hearing the familiar melody calms Epona, causing her to run directly to Link. Mount her and practice jumping over the wooden fences around the ring to get comfortable with horse controls.

Challenging Ingo to a Horse Race

While riding Epona, speak to Ingo from horseback and challenge him to a race for 50 Rupees. Use your carrots strategically during the race to boost speed without exhausting all stamina before the finish line. After defeating him once, Ingo demands a rematch where he wagers Epona herself.

Escaping Lon Lon Ranch

Winning the second race prompts a furious Ingo to lock the ranch gates, trapping you inside the property. Simply turn Epona around, build up speed, and jump over the high wall near the exit gates to gain freedom. Once clear of the ranch, Epona becomes fully available whenever you play her song across Hyrule Field.
